Horace Parlan: Up and Down

April 14, 2009 by Joshua Jackson

parlanupdown_sPianist Horace Parlan recorded the album Up & Down for Blue Note Records in 1961.  You’ve probably never heard it, unless you’re an obsessive jazz record collector.

At the time, Parlan’s trio was the house band at Minton’s jazz club in Harlem.  They’re joined by guitarist Grant Green and the modern roadhouse sound of tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin.  Hear Ervin’s blues, “The Book’s Beat.”

Buy the music.
