Behn Gillece: Dare To Be

Behn Gillece

After more than a decade on the jazz scene, vibraphonist Behn Gillece is known as a gifted player and composer. He swings like those he admires, vibes masters Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson and Gary Burton.

"Dare To Be" is Behn's second recording as leader. Using the four-mallet technique, Gillece put together a piano less group featuring guitarist Nate Radley, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Jason Tiemann. The group grows by one for a couple of tunes when trumpeter Bruce Harris is added to the mix.

Vibe enthusiasts will dig what's done with Bobby Hutcherson's "Same Shame".

But don't overlook the wealth of the leader's charts here, like "Camera Eyes", a high geared salute to Small's Jazz Club in New York City.

The Jobim inspired "From Your Perspective", blues drenched "Amethyst" or modern title track confirms that Ben Gillece writes as good as he hits.

Add to the tune selection the closer, Johnny Mandel's "A Time For Love", which Behn says was inspired by a Milt Jackson / Buddy Montgomery go round.

On "Dare To Be" Behn Gillece has challenged himself and his musical friends to new places, with a groove that dares to be edgy and insightfully straight forward. It comes out August 12. In the meantime enjoy the listen here.
