Chick Corea: Trilogy

The Chick Corea Trio

Pianist Chick Corea has been a prime force in jazz since the late 1960s, whether with Miles Davis, duos with Gary Burton and Bela Fleck, his groundbreaking group Return to Forever, or many solo efforts. He's an NEA Jazz Master and rightly so, and has 20 Grammy Awards to his credit. So anytime a new Corea release is approaching, it's a major event.

Trilogy is  a 3-disc set that captures Chick's work on the road with stellar bassist and three-time Grammy winner Christian McBride, and the dynamic drummer Brian Blade, whose ongoing work in Wayne Shorter's quartet has garnered numerous accolades.

"Both Brian and Christian are master musicians in there own right, and together there's an easy rapport; there's a lot of give and take in our music," says Chick.  "It's always fun; I find myself trying things I wouldn't normally try. Playing live for an audience is one of the most rewarding things I do."

Throughout the set, which clocks in at just over three hours, you'll hear familiar Corea nuggets, some brand new material and interpretations from the Great American Songbook, with a new sparkle and magic only these three could bring. The expansive new piece "Piano Sonata: Moon" has them weaving the written parts with improvised sections.

Along the way, special guests joined in as well. Flutist Jorge Pardo, guitarist Nino Josele and Corea's wife, Gayle Moran, all make appearances and add to the music's magic.

Trilogy comes out on Chick's own Stretch label September 9th.
