Christian McBride Trio: Out Here

Christian McBride Trio Out Here cover art

Christian McBride always had an ear out for pianist Christian Sands after the two met on Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz" radio program in 2010. Drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. has been locking in with McBride's Inside Straight Band and Grammy-winning big band since 2011.

When a group fires together like this threesome, it's "Hallelujah Time," Oscar Peterson's churchy burner, one of the highlights of this new Mack Avenue release, which arrives August 6.

A nod to Billy Taylor, "Easy Walker", confirms these three are out here for our enjoyment.

The sense of floating in the music is missed with a lot of younger musicians. Not so with Sands and Owens, who along with their older brother find soulful satisfaction and fire along the Hammerstein/Rogers trail with "My Favorite Things."

McBride carries the melody of "East of the Sun" in a fashion that dictates a listen and resonates why he is, bottom line - THE CAT!

The tempo changes of "Cherokee" will have you sharing the same good feeling apparent when Christian, Christian and Ulysses went into the studio for this date.

For all fans of the music, the sweet spots through this collective give applause to the jazz trio and makes us damn glad these three are out here... together.
