Etienne Charles: San Jose Suite

Etienne Charles, San Jose Suite, Jazz, Trinidad, Costa Rica, California, calypso

For trumpeter Etienne Charles the music by itself is never enough. We learned it with his previous recordings, where side by side with his music were the folktales of his Caribbean youth, or the merging of jazz, calypso, Kongo and bebop. From wherever his musical inspiration comes, Etienne Charles always makes sure we understand and feel the big picture.
With "San Jose Suite", Etienne connects a musical thread from San Jose, in his native Trinidad to San Jose, Costa Rica, to San Jose in California.

Charles' musical concepts of community are realized alongside saxophonist Brian Hogans, guitarist Alex Wintz, Victor Gould on piano, Fender Rhodes & organ, bassist Ben Williams, drummer John Davis and spoken word from Dr. Harry Edwards.
With Rhythms from around the world, and his own ability to crystallize musical cultures into a musical community, Etienne Charles and his friends are able to weave this  worldly tale, expressing in music the first people of the areas, complete with struggle and joy.

It's worth the trip. Charles will celebrate "San Jose Suite" live at Dizzy's June 28th & 29th, and in July at festivals in Newport and Caramoor in Katonah, New York.
