Joey Calderazzo: "Going Home"

joey calderazzo going home

For Joey Calderazzo, the piano first invited a tryout at age 6. It stuck.

As he continued to develop, he discovered the jazz stylings of McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Calderazzo went on to study with Richie Beirach, record with saxophonists  Bob Mintzer and Vincent Herring, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and guitarist Dave Stryker and gain worldwide attention recording and touring in the bands of Michael Brecker, and more recently, Branford Marsalis.

For "Going Home," his upcoming Sunnyside Records release, Calderazzo is joined by outstanding bassist Orlando le Fleming and the always musical Adam Cruz on drums.

This trio gets right to it on "Manifold", a building boiler where both  improvisation and group interplay shine.

A Calderazzo ballad, "I Never Knew," follows and provides a gorgeous palette for Branford Marsalis on tenor sax.

With "Why Me" Calerazzo reimagines the evergreen "All Of Me," building a 6/8 over 4/4 time, expressing an appealing bouncy freedom.

The classic "Stars Fell on Alabama" is a clear sky for the trio to slowly work their late night luster.

The leader's original "Legend" is a building free space for the trio to make this a trip worth taking in a moment's notice.

Calderazzo's "One Way" was originally performed in duo with Branford. Here, the trio revisits this one with a second line Nod to the Crescent City.

"My Foolish Heart" gives the pianist a chance for look inside, similar to those late night 20 question sessions we sometimes have with ourselves.

Joey originally wrote "Mike's Song" when he was a member of the Michael Brecker Quartet. Here the trio convey The intentions of Brecker's enormous musical spirit.

The title track was written for a friend who passed too soon. Calderazzo's emotions are displayed showing the passioned journey his art has taken him on.

"Coming Home" comes to you March 31st.
