Will Calhoun: Celebrating Elvin Jones

Will Calhoun

For drummer Will Calhoun, life has always possessed two prime enablers - rhythm and personality. Certainly attractions by themselves, but when combined, we entered the cult, or were part of the voice in the open letter expressed by Living Colour, for many the first Will Calhoun encounter.

Investigating the rhythmic life in his world reveals a life in this world.....of jazz, with Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Watson, Ron Carter, Donald Harrison, for a few, and it runs DEEP. For Will, listening to Elvin with the Coltrane Quartet was in the holy trinity of Miles' 60's quintet and the Jimi Hendrix Experince. So, when the new Will Calhoun cd arrives, announcing a celebration of Elvin Jones, you're immediately drawn to the effort. Will regards Elvin's drumming with the Coltrane Quartet as a holy trinity alongside Miles' 60's Quintet and Jimi Hendrix.

Bassist Christian McBride, pianist Carlos McKinney, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, saxophonist Antoine Roney and special guests Jan Hammer on keyboards and Senegalese master drummer Doudou N'Diaye feed the fire - whether on Jones' "EJ Blues", Coltrane's "Harmonique", the Wayne Shorter story, "Mahjong" or Will's tune, "Sarmastah", a blueish original highlighted by Callhoun on 12-string acoustic guitar. Elvin would like this tribute. So would Keiko, his wife. So will you.

Will Calhoun's "Celebrating Elvin Jones" comes out August 19th on Motema Music.
